Ask us or find your answer here

Who is required to file a US tax return?
All US citizens and green card holders must file an annual US tax return, regardless of where they live or where their income is earned. Certain visa holders (like H-1B, L-1) may also be required to file if they meet US residency rules.
I live in India but am a US citizen/green card holder. Do I still need to file?
Yes. The US taxes its citizens and green card holders on their worldwide income, even if you live permanently outside the US.
What if I have no income or income only in India – do I still need to file?
Yes, in most cases. Even if your income is entirely from India, you still have a US filing obligation. The return ensures you remain compliant and can also help you claim credits and exclusions to avoid double taxation.
Do I need to report my Indian mutual funds, PF accounts, or insurance policies?
Yes. US rules require disclosure of many foreign financial accounts and investments, including Indian mutual funds, Provident Fund (PF), and some insurance policies. Reporting requirements vary, and we guide you on what needs to be disclosed.
What documents do I need to provide for US tax filing?
Typically, you’ll need: Indian income tax return and Form 26AS, Bank interest certificates, Investment statements (mutual funds, insurance, PF, etc.), Salary slips or Form 16 (if employed in India), and any US income documents (like W-2 or 1099). We’ll provide you with a checklist to make this simple.
Do you also help with Indian income tax returns?
Yes. Since we specialize in both US and Indian taxation, we can prepare and coordinate both returns so that credits and treaty benefits are correctly applied.
I plan to surrender my green card. Do I still need to file?
Yes. You must continue filing until your green card is formally surrendered. In some cases, an exit tax may apply. We can help you navigate this process.
What is the deadline to file a US tax return if I am living outside the US?
The standard US filing deadline is April 15. However, US citizens and residents living abroad automatically get a two-month extension until June 15. You can also apply for an additional extension up to October 15.
Will I be taxed twice – in both India and the US?
No. The US has provisions like the Foreign Tax Credit (FTC) and Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE), and also a tax treaty with India. These ensure that you don’t pay tax twice on the same income.
What is FBAR and do I need to file it?
If you are a US citizen or green card holder and your aggregate foreign bank balances exceed $10,000 at any time during the year, you must file an FBAR (Foreign Bank Account Report). This is separate from your tax return.
How much do you charge for preparing a US tax return?
Our fees depend on the complexity of your return and whether Indian and US filings are both required. We keep our pricing transparent and provide a clear quote upfront—no hidden costs.
What are the penalties for not filing US tax returns as a citizen abroad?
Penalties can be severe, especially for non-reporting of foreign accounts (FBAR/FATCA). However, the IRS has programs like the Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures that allow you to catch up without heavy penalties if you’ve missed past filings.
Do I need to file US state tax returns as well?
That depends. If you lived or worked in a US state during the year, or still have ties like property or business income there, you may need to file a state return. We’ll review your situation and guide you.
How do you keep my data safe?
We use secure, encrypted channels for all document sharing and communications. Your financial information remains confidential and is never shared without your consent.
